Dia de Muertos is a national phenomenon with people everywhere in Mexico cleaning graves, decorating them with flowers, holding graveyard vigils and building elaborate altars to welcome back their loved ones.  Perhaps no other festival reveals more about Mexican spirituality than Dia de Muertos which originated in colonial times when the Catholic Church fused indigenous rites honoring and communing with the dead with its own celebrations of All Saints'Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Guanajuato is no exception, the pantheon is buzzing with activity with many families spending the night at the graveyard communing with their loved ones while enjoying the strolling mariachis and the ubiquitous fragrance of flowers.
