"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home. You are like a pebble thrown into water; you become wet on the surface but you are never a part of the water."

- JAMES A. MICHENER

Currency Exchange
ATM machines – For our guests who have ATM/Debit cards, the airports, some hotels, and local banks, have ATM machines that dispense the local currency at the going rate of exchange, plus nominal fee. There may be additional fees added by your own bank.

Casas de Cambio – There are also local exchange houses that are available to exchange foreign currency.

Banks – Local banks are also able to assist you with obtaining the local currency. However, long lines could waste valuable sightseeing time!

Pay Telephones
There are pay telephones in Mexico that only take calling cards. These calling cards can be purchased in many locations, including grocery stores, pharmacies, hotels and liquor stores.

Dialing Instructions from Pay Telephones
Before you leave your country of origin, you may find it handy to check on the manner of dialing into your country and into Mexico from outside countries. As an example, to dial the US from Mexico, you need to dial 001, plus the area code and phone number. To dial a number in Mexico from the US, you dial 011, 52 (Mexico’s country code), the area code and phone number.

Cell phones
There are many cell phone companies outside of Mexico that offer service in Mexico. Prior to departing for Mexico, you may wish to call your cellular service provider to determine if they offer coverage in the area you are traveling. You will also wish to ask how to connect once you’ve arrived in Mexico.

Clothing
Comfortable walking shoes are appropriate for the cobblestone streets. A light jacket and an umbrella will come in handy for the Summer and Fall months as the rainy season can extend from June through October. It can be cool to cold in December and January, so layered clothing is best during these months. The warmest months are April and May.

Altitude
It is especially important to remember that you are at a high altitude. Guanajuato centro is at 6583 feet, and the Inn stands at nearly 7200 feet. It will take you at least a day to acclimate, so go slow and enjoy your first day. Drink lots of water.

Safety
Tourist crime occurs infrequently, and personal safety is essentially a matter of taking the usual common sense precautions.

Transportation
Buses - There are first class buses that run between the major cities in Mexico, including Guanajuato, Guadalajara and Mexico City. Smaller bus lines, such as Flecha Amarilla, run between smaller cities such as Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende.

Private Drivers – Most bed & breakfasts and hotels have a list of private drivers available to take guests around the city and between neighboring cities. There are also transportation companies that can arrange to take groups of 6 or more.

Taxis – Local taxi service is inexpensive and can sometimes take guests between neighboring cities, too. Airport taxi service is required for all arriving guests, unless a local taxi service or private driver is registered with the airport.
